New Law: Act 313

The Louisiana Legislature passed a law this spring that prohibits students from using electronic devices (cell phones) on school property during the instructional day.

Our current policy also says that electronic devices such as cell phones must be turned off and stored out of sight during the school day. As a reminder, violations of School Board Policy JCDAE will result in progressive discipline in accordance with the JP Schools Code of Conduct as set forth in the Procedures and Policies for Parents and Students.

The Student Council is a student-led organization that was created to make sure student voices are heard and prioritized. The students participate in a fun campaigning process, give speeches, and are elected by their peers (K-8) to represent them throughout the school year.

They participate in fundraising, organizing school events, and constantly encourage students to be the best versions of themselves all school year long. Oftentimes, they meet with the administration to discuss important issues, and look for solutions to problems that arise in our community.

Our candidates are students that exemplify what it means to be a Soaring Eagle. They lead with honesty and integrity.

Support your child to be successful in school

Help your child understand that school is their very first job!

  • Make great school attendance a priority for your child.

  • Talk to your child about the importance of daily attendance in every class and how it helps his/her learning.

  • When students miss school so much, they will not be prepared for the next grade.

Help your child develop good habits

  • Help your child practice good daily habits like:

    • finishing homework and placing it in his/her backpack

    • laying out clothes and the backpack in the evening

    • having a regular bedtime for a good night's sleep

    • leaving early enough in the morning to get to school on time.

    • turn off electronic devices one hour before bedtime.

Help your child build responsibility skills by reminding them to make up for any missed school work after an absence.

Meet our Student Council Candidates

On Friday September 8th we had a very intense and exciting election. Students in grades 6th-8th signed up for respective roles held by students at their grade levels. Then, based on a small list of requirements, students participate in the application process. This application consists of questions that allow candidates the opportunity to reflect on why they want to participate in The Students' Government Association, and also what qualities they have to be a great leader for all students. Students campaigned and worked on their election speeches. Students were given 2 weeks to prepare speeches and convince their peers why they would make a great leader.

Our elected officials will be announced in the second week of this month.
Council
September is National Attendance Awareness Month!
Did you know that chronic absenteeism is missing 10 percent or greater of the total number of days enrolled during the school year for any reason?
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Attendance is essential in school and your child's future endeavors.
Thank you for supporting good school attendance!

22-23 G.T. Woods Student Government Association

The Student Government Association was created during the 2021-2022 school year. After Hurricane Ida, many students wanted to be a part of rebuilding our Woods community/family.

The Student Government Association was created to give our students an opportunity to lead all of our Eagles to excellence. Our members are an intricate part of their learning experience and their learning environment. The goal of the student council is to create an environment where student voices are not only heard but considered in the learning process.

During the first few weeks of school, students in grades 6-8 sign up for respective roles held by students at their grade levels. Then, based on a small list of requirements, students participate in the application process. This application consists of questions that allow candidates the opportunity to reflect on why they want to participate in The Students' Government Association, and also what qualities they have to be a great leader for all students.
Next, students begin campaigning and working on their election speeches. Students are given 2 weeks to prepare speeches and convince their peers why they would make a great leader.

On election day after speeches are delivered, grades 3-8 complete a virtual ballot to vote in a very intense and exciting election.

Our elected officials are announced the next school day.

G.T. Woods would like to say a big, "Thank You," to Proclaimed Community Outreach. As a part of their grant, we were able to surprise our students with free snowballs after our School Wide Pep Rally and Goal Setting Day.  Students received their data binders and set their personal goals for the year, and then ended the day cooling off with a refreshing snowball.

Thank you Proclaimed Community Outreach!
